As robust a replication as you can need, but be sure it's what you need

4.0 7 years ago

Comments: We had to learn and identify those very specific use cases where Carbonite Availability was without any doubt the best tool for replication. Mostly, those few servers which are the most critical for the organization, and require the highest possible uptime.
Sometimes we struggle to get it running whenever the origin server was installed with a non-standard operating system media, since the software needs a clean OS with exactly the same version is installed in the secondary site.

Pros:

Double Take, currently known as Carbonite Availability since it no longer belongs to Vision Solutions, delivers on every single feature it offers. It doesn't matter the server deployment model on either the primary or any of the secondary sites you have, whether you are using bare metal servers, public clouds, or any private cloud or virtualization technology, you can replicate. If your telecommunication infraestructure allows it, you'll get that near-zero RPOs and RTOs critical for your business. Carbonite did a great job redesigning the licensing model, now you need only the license for the origin server, a not for destinations, which allows Carbonite Availability to compete with other vendors.

Cons:

More than a "Con", I understand the way data is replicated requires that servers in the remote site are online, unless you use either Hyper-V or VMWare as destination, which allows you to replicate to offline VMs. Double-Take or Carbonite Availability is not a technology you can use to implement de DRP or four whole infrastructure because most of the time, doing so, will make no sense at all financially. When you don't really need near-zero RPOs / RTOs, or when you are using VMWare or Hyper-V , or even a public cloud as either primary or secondary, there are more efficient ways to get the job done.
