Moodle has first mover advantage, but now there are many LMS that are easier to use

4.0 2 months ago

Comments: We used Moodle as an advanced certification platform. It has built-in features such as quiz, assignments, and course completion tracking that can be used to administer assessments and track student progress. Additionally, it was integrated with other tools such as e-signature and digital certificate provider to provide secure and verifiable certifications. Moodle allowed us to create custom certificates and badges, which can be awarded to students upon completion of specific courses or activities. Furthermore, Moodle's reporting and data analysis tools can be used to generate detailed reports and analytics on student performance and certification progress. With own modifications we created also a validation tool that can verify validity of issued certificate.

Pros:

+ Flexibility: Moodle is open-source and can be customized to individual user and institution needs.+ Support for different teaching methods: it allows for the creation of various educational activities and resources such as quizzes, discussion forums, assignments, etc.+ Integration with other tools: Moodle can easily be integrated with other educational tools such as chat, group work tools, video hosting platforms (we used Vimeo) and file transfer systems (but has also own file repository).+ Reporting and analysis: Moodle has advanced reporting and data analysis tools that allow for monitoring student progress and adapting teaching to needs.+ Accessibility: Moodle is available both as a web application and a mobile app, allowing for access to learning from anywhere and at any time. With external plugins and themes it is WCAG compatibile.

Cons:

- Learning curve: Moodle can have a steep learning curve for users who are not familiar with the platform or with e-learning in general, and it may take some time for users to become proficient in using all its features. Compared to Wiziq or WP Courseware - moodle is most complicated.- Limited design options: While Moodle does offer some customization options for its appearance, it may not be as flexible as some other learning management systems in terms of design and layout. It looks "oldish" and it is hard to find a good looking theme (with good UX/SEO/RWD/WCAG)- Limited multimedia support: Moodle may not have built-in support for all types of multimedia, such as video and audio. But there is a plenty of external plugins that may handle that.- Limited scalability: Moodle may not be the best option for large organizations or enterprises with high-traffic needs, as it may not be able to handle large numbers of users or large amounts of data. We need to do a MAJOR hosting upgrade to handle large certification groups (400-500 in the same time).- Lack of support for mobile devices: While Moodle has a mobile app, its support for mobile devices is not as comprehensive as some other LMSs. I think that better option would be PWA but im not sure how/when they will support this.- Support and maintenance: As open-source software, Moodle does not have a dedicated technical support team and users may need to rely on community forums or hire experts to help with any technical issues.

Free and Open-Source Learning Management System, flexible but not too much.

5.0 2 months ago New

Comments: Moodle can be used to solve a wide range of business problems related to employee training and development, online education and e-learning, collaboration and communication, corporate compliance, and employee performance tracking and evaluation.

Pros:

Centralized access to course materials.Variety of interactive and engaging activities, such as quizzes, forums, and wikis.Allows teachers to track student progress and performance, with features such as gradebook and progress tracking.Moodle's built-in tools for communication and collaboration, such as forums and messaging, can be used to facilitate online discussions and group work, even when students are not in the same physical location.Moodle can be integrated with other business systems, such as HR and payroll systems, or with online meeting tools.Moodle provides APIs and web services to allow external systems to interact with it, but this requires technical expertise to set up and may require additional development and customisation.

Cons:

Moodle is generally considered to be easy to use for administrators, teachers and students, but there are some aspects of the platform that can be more difficult for certain users. For administrators:The initial setup and configuration of Moodle can be complex and time-consuming, particularly for those unfamiliar with the platform.Customising and extending Moodle's features and functionality can require technical expertise and development skills that not all administrators may have.Moodle's reporting and analysis features may be limited for some administrators and may require additional customisation and development to meet their specific needs. For teachers:Creating and organising online course materials can take time and effort.Creating and managing online assessments and quizzes can be complex and time-consuming, especially for writing questions and gradebooks for automated grading. For learners:Some of the interactive activities and resources may be more challenging for some students to use, particularly for those who are not familiar with the platform.Moodle's reporting and analytics features may be limited for some students, and they may require additional customization and development to meet specific needs. There is no possibility to adapt the learning experience to specific needs or to the real-time grade. These difficulties can be overcome providing training and support for users, which will be the only cost of the software besides the infrastructure.

Moodle has a potential, but needs to be improved

3.0 3 months ago

Comments: I am torn between liking and not liking this software. I like that it was helpful to track your courses, but the ease of access is not effective.

Pros:

Students can access their learning materials and lessons even on mobile. The feature that I like is the assignment deadline and the integration of Turn It In

Cons:

The website crashes often, also the mobile app is laggy. There are times where the features do not work properly. The layout is also not easy to navigate.

Feature Rich but Seldom Used

3.5 7 years ago

Pros:

Moodle is open source so it allows for much flexibility and freedom to make it your own. I went to the moodlemoot last year in Minnesota and their team was very knowledgable and helpful.

Cons:

Moodle tries to do too much which makes it clunky. Because Moodle is used in so many different institutions, they can't meet your specific needs as quickly as other LMS vendors.

A complete solution for blended learning!

5.0 4 years ago

Comments: I have implemented Moodle LMS for many industries including Colleges, Universities, Manufacturing, Retail, Career Development Centers, Online Training institutions, Information, Media & Entertainment industries. Except the product is an open-source, I do not see ANY issues. This can be hosted in Amazon Web Services or in Azure cloud, it can be hosted in client environment. Moodle can be integrated with any 3rd party (both inbound and outbound) applications as long as their APIs are exposed. This has lot of in-built plugins/tools to manage ILT Events and Sessions, Chats, Virtual Learning Environment tools, etc. I highly recommend this low-cost solution for any type of industry.

Pros:

Moodle is a complete e-Learning platform for many industries. It is well-suited for Education Industry. I have implemented Moodle in the large universities and colleges in the world. Most inspiring features are - the course section which can be grouped based on customized categories and sub-categories - forum which can be associated with the topics at course level or at organization level - Cohort which helps the institute to manage the batch-wise students group every year and can be promoted to next level without much manual efforts - Question Bank which can accommodate more than 12 types of assessments and can also be integrated with other assessment management systems or plugins

Cons:

There is no limitation on the features, since this is an open source application, we cannot use it for GxP contents in Life Sciences and may not comply with Banking/Insurance industries.

Moodle - The Perfect Open Source LMS

5.0 2 years ago

Comments: I have used Moodle since 2005. I first introduced it to the school district I worked in. After its introduction, it became the number one online source for teachers, students, and parents. I based my doctoral thesis on the use of Moodle in our school district. I've also used it over the years, as an educational consultant, part-time college faculty remember, and educational trainer.

Pros:

First off the software is free. If you have a server, either hosting yourself or hosting service, you can easily set up a Moodle. With a little experience, you are able to have your class up and running in no time. Easily import information into your course. Finally, there are numerous free plugins that enhance your course.

Cons:

The biggest problem is if you find a plugin that you can use in your course if you don't have access to the backend to install you may run into problems with whoever administers the Moodle to install the plugins.

5 Year Student Experience with Moodle

3.0 2 years ago

Comments: Overall, Moodle has been a (necessary) help throughout my time in higher education. It's great when professors want it to be great, but without their development efforts, it's pretty lackluster and reflects poorly on them.

Pros:

Our university portal was a skinned version of Moodle, and when set up correctly, it provided a streamlined experience with access to all course materials, forums, and grades. It's lightweight and easy to navigate. As a TA, I found that the backend was equally simple, though some professors clogged it with information that led to a bloated administrative experience.

Cons:

The software is only as good as the professor (or page administrator) wants it to be. Those that go the distance are able to offer a streamlined complement to the learning experience, in-depth feedback, and supplement the class with online resources. Professors that did not take the time to do this left us with a barebones skeleton of a page that seemed to reflect disinterest in interacting with the students.

A reliable learning platform with a vibrant community.

5.0 10 months ago

Comments: I'm proud to be a Moodle user for over 15 years and it's steady progress and the ability to have a paid rollout shows how much this Leaning Management System has grown over the years. If you are starting your E-Learning journey and want a LMS that is easy to use, free, & with an active community then look no further than Moodle.

Pros:

I have been using Moodle since 2007 and boy, has it come a long way since then. The Learning Management System has always prided itself on being open and even back then had a wonderful community who are keen to help. Moodle is now widely available for instant installation in many hosting providers so it's easy to setup and there are plenty of paid and free resources to learn how to setup your first Moodle course. The features to develop lessons been greatly augmented by the introduction of H5P taking it to commercial standard. Course Management has always been Moodle's strength and teachers and student's alike find Moodle to be easy to use and navigate. Assessments are varied from formative to summative methods and now reflective methods such as ePortfolio. Moodle also has a massive plugin community to cater to nearly every need.

Cons:

Being a free and open-source software, Moodle requires the user to be somewhat tech savvy with some basic knowledge of how code works and this is especially useful when needing HTML to prepare content. Since their is no customer support, Users should also be willing to seek help from the Moodle community forums which usually give good advice.

Moodle has been one of the best tools I have ever implemented in my high school courses!

5.0 5 years ago

Comments: I think I stated most if not all the benefits in the "pro" section. It's a great time saver once courses are set up.
I can see the stats on my students' involvement with the various parts of it.
I can cut down paper work by having files submitted electronically.
I can use rubrics of my own design to quickly grade programming assignments
I can mark up PDF submissions on the screen to give feedback.
I can moderate discussions and teach students how to speak in a forum setting.
I can provide more opportunities for students to think and produce more creatively.
I can enjoy creating my own materials!

Pros:

Moodle allows me to provided a blended learning environment for my students. I use it for AP Statistics, AP Computer Science A, AP Computer Science Principles, and Integrated Math 1. I can post assignment schedules, additional readings, links to off-site materials, etc. just as I did in my web pages in the past. However, it also allows me to assign "lessons" that my students do interactively online, discussion boards where they have to write their thoughts coherently, and assignments where students upload files for me to review and grade. It has become an important communication tool for me to use with both students and parents outside school hours. No student can say they forgot their book at school or don't remember the assignment because texts and assignments are online in Moodle. Parents can see what their students are doing in my class academically and not just the grades they receive. Moodle has become more important to my teaching than the textbook. All resources can be found in one place and students can interact with the materials, each other, and me in class and outside class. We have even implemented a computer lab and device reservation system for teachers in Moodle which has saved our librarians a ton of hours of work each week.

Cons:

Moodle is not intuitive to the novice. It took some time for me to learn how to use its many features and implement them well. I have been doing this for at least 8 years, but I am still learning more about the system and its capabilities. As the server administrator, doing upgrades has always been problematic. I don't think an upgrade has ever gone smoothly. The reason I stick with it is because I haven't found a LMS that can offer me as much as Moodle. Plus, it's free and we can run it in-house.

Best of both worlds for teachers and students

4.0 2 months ago

Comments: Overall, Moodle is a reliable and user-friendly learning platform that combines the best of both worlds for teachers and students. It provides an easy-to-use interface, a range of useful features, and the flexibility to learn at your own pace.

Pros:

Moodle is a fantastic learning platform that makes it easy for both teachers and students to connect and learn. Quizzes are simple to take and are time-bound, which helps to keep students focused and on track. Additionally, the platform makes it easy for teachers to check quizzes on the spot, which allows for quick feedback and progress tracking. One of the best features of Moodle is its flexibility. Students can access the platform at any time and from any location, which makes it perfect for distance learning or for those with busy schedules. Teachers also have the ability to create and assign coursework, track student progress, and communicate with their students all through the platform. One of the benefits of Moodle is that it is well-suited for group assignments. With the platform, teachers have the ability to set up group projects and have students work together to complete them. This can be a valuable learning experience for students, as it helps them develop teamwork and collaboration skills. One feature that is particularly useful for group assignments is the ability for only one member of the group to submit the final project. This can be a time-saver for both teachers and students, as it eliminates the need for multiple submissions and ensures that there is only one version of the project to review and grade.

Cons:

While Moodle is generally a reliable and useful learning platform, there are a few areas where it could be improved. One issue that has been noticed is that the platform can sometimes get stuck or slow down, especially when there are a lot of users accessing it at the same time. This can be frustrating for both teachers and students, as it can disrupt the flow of learning and make it difficult to complete tasks on time.Another issue with Moodle is that it can be difficult to upload large files. This can be a problem for students who have assignments with a lot of media or who are working on projects that require a lot of resources. It would be helpful if Moodle had a more robust file management system that could handle larger files without causing problems. Finally, there have been instances where the platform has given errors when students try to submit assignments. This can be confusing, as it is not always clear whether the assignment has been successfully submitted or not. It would be helpful if Moodle had a more reliable submission system that could prevent these types of errors from occurring.

E-learning Plus Full package of online studying

5.0 2 years ago

Comments: Extraordinary, learning with perfect understanding, ideation, E-learning, online learning leds to flexible learning.

Pros:

I am a student of Hochschule Duesseldorf University of applied sciences. My university is on Moodle and my every second thing is operated by means of moodle. My lectures notes, attendance, research papers, books, Homework, assignments and even some times examinations with the end result everything is done on moodle platform. It is an complete platform for an university student. Every course is given a separate folder by which ease of operation is achieved. During this corona pandemic time my lectures were also done via moodle and also by other online platform but moodle is the medium of uploading the recorded lectures which is very much helpful for the teachers as well as for students. Various Forums were created by lecturers on moodle in order to have a Q/A session or a survey session by which every student can participate and can also upload their respective files. On my vision, moodle is the best learning tool I ever come through, it is simpler and better way of teaching and providing teaching materials. Also there is an Chat option by which teachers can guide there students.

Cons:

Moodle can create a sudden limitation toward ones privacy as every one in the course is able to operate almost every thing which is available in the course material and forum which can be not a suitable thing for everyone. I think moodle should provide some privacy features like only xyz person can see and edit the files or works by which false marketing and copying can be avoided but it is just an suggestion from my side as in my class such a situation had arises in some previous time.

Moodle LMS - Decent Learning Management System

5.0 2 months ago

Comments: At the end of the day Moodle LMS is a decent learning management system.

Pros:

Moodle LMS is one of the best Learner's Portal. Moodle was very helpful in the pandemic period. Moodle LMS serves as a bridge between the instructor and learners. File Sharing is works perfect, students can access the course materials easy at any time. Course management and publishing course materials are very easy in Moodle. In admin point of view, it very easy to upload contents, share and schedule session is very easy. Integrating Moodle with the education institution is also very easy. Admins can update the course files instantly and it is reflecting at the end user at no time.

Cons:

Moodle has a very high learning curve in my point of view. Moodle's interface is outdated. Latency in the platform is also high at sometimes. If any problem occurs, troubleshooting is cannot be done by a layman. Moodle LMS has to improve their platform to matchup and catchup with the other LMS platforms.

Moodle as a student and administrator

5.0 5 years ago

Comments: There is not really any cons about Moodle. It is a highly satisfying product that is worth a try.

Pros:

First: It is free! As a student: it has easy navigation, provides a dashboard with all the related courses currently enrolled, it has a calendar on the right highlighting all the upcoming submission dates. It also notifies us about the upcoming events the lecture has set. All the information are arranged in a neat format. It shows the online users. It has portfolio option, makes it easy to keep track of all our works. It also has email facilities so we can email other users. As an administrator: There is so many features incorporated in Moodle! The teacher has the power to design the moodle course in however way they want: It integrates SCORM packages, documents, videos, links, quiz, different grading systems (average/individual) and the grade history of the students on the platform. The teacher also has the flexibility to program when to make one lesson visible (by presetting the time and date), when to close assignment submission past deadline automatically, or to create specific forums and events. One can use moodle to run a class or to act as a learning repertoire. There is also the option to add a chat room for a particular lesson. What I also appreciate is the feature to monitor course participation and activity log report of students. By including keys to the lessons, we can control who we give access to the contents on the forum. Thus it can either be open contents or private. The power lies in the hands of the administrator.

Cons:

The chat feature should be an in-built feature rather than a pop-out screen available only when the administrator adds it as part of a lesson.

Moodle Through a student's eyes

5.0 2 years ago

Comments: The overall experience using Moodle is good. It great to navigate even if your a first time user and is very effective in online teacher especially during this pandemic.

Pros:

I've been using Moodle for three years now. Since the pandemic i had to be using it more frequently to check for assignments, course outlines, discussion forums and due dates. What I enjoy about Moodle is its easy navigations and how organize it is. It also provide a mini calendar that publish the due dates of assignments from different courses. Now here is another plus to this calendar, it takes you directly to the assignment information without you having to go through the hassle of scrolling and looking for the assignment that is due. Also, submissions of assignments are fast and easy as it allows you to upload your document from your device and as simple as 1-2 clicks sometimes and then your finish, and even allow you to edit the submission a few minutes after you initial attempt just incase you made a mistake. The discussion forums on Moodle are very interactive, it makes it easy to read and critique your classmates work and like the submission portal it allows you to edit your responses up to 30 minutes of the initial post.

Cons:

What I don't like much about Moodle is that sometimes when there are a lot of users accessing the portal it tends malfunction and bar users from accessing the website. This happens especially when there is a major assignment due and everyone is trying to submit before the deadline ends.

Free Open-Source Powerful Learning Management System

Comments: Great LMS Platform for both Teachers and Students. Ease of configuration and deployment. It includes all the features like, courses, Assignments, Exams and many more. Moodle for Advanced learning Experience!

5.0 2 years ago

Comments: Moodle is the #1 choice for those who are serious about the educational environment produced by everyone involved in the school. When this software is used right it takes the burden away from the teacher in having to produce everything their self. Many software packages are pretty, but the question is this, where is their backend? If is not there, so it may look good 'on the cover' but it simply does not have the functionality of moodle. Moodle is a platform, and you can add the front-end features with other products.

Pros:

This is the best software to implement when you need a lot of supportive materials that can be built up over the years that give this software its edge.

Cons:

Although it is very powerful in the background, it lacks everything that is style and elegance. With moodle the software is for integration of the content materials across your whole network. That makes it perfect for teachers that can produce papers and research and moodle will keep track of ever comment, and stimultae discussions and thoughts, and over the years a school will have a 'flavor' and trend of thoughts and ideas which is the goal of a good online school.

Moodle is the best learning system out there

5.0 7 months ago

Comments: My experience using Moodle is good. Moodle allowed me to communicate with my instructor much more faster, finish exams much easier, and receive almost immediate feedback on my marks. The training resources are now much easier to access and use.

Pros:

I have been using Moodle as a student for about six years, and it manages all of the lecture materials and online tests. It is straightforward and adaptable to use. You may search for assignments due dates, course calendars, forums, and more. Moodle's organization and ease of use are two of my favorite features. There is also a small calendar that lists the dates that particular courses' tasks are due. Another advantage of using this calendar is that it will take you directly to the assignment details, saving you the time and effort of scrolling and looking for the task that is due. Additionally, you may upload your document from your smartphone and edit your work up to a few minutes after you initially submit it, just in case, making the assignment submission process quick and easy. Similar to the submission site, the interactive Moodle discussion boards make it simple to read and assess your classmates' work and give you the chance to edit your feedback.

Cons:

For a beginner, using Moodle is challenging. It is free software, but for a non-technical user, building and configuring it is challenging. I had to learn how to use all of its features and put them to good use, which took some time.

Great if you have a decent IT department

3.0 6 years ago

Pros:

Free (except to host it-see below in cons) Lots of free articles and you tube videos to help you with it. If you are task oriented, you can set up an entire course with this program including videos, pictures, web pages, test, SCORM packages, whatever you want. I even have courses within courses. You can train others to use it as well. Administration is pretty good so you can have others create courses or content, but not have the ability to screw things up.

Cons:

Clunky and scroll of death are common descriptors of the program. It is free and there are updates coming out all the time, but you better have a good IT department that is willing to host the site, manage the server, etc. My webpage guy at my fire department set this up for me for free. Then I got a bill from someone that he had to hire to set it up because it was over his head. I don't dare ask him to upgrade it because I will probably get another bill. But I can still use it, just some of the newer features don't work. As soon as I can, I will try to get my City's IT department to host it for me on a newer server. There are quite a few Moodle partners who will host it for you, but they are extremely expensive. I tried to host it myself with a free web hosting service and it worked for a day or two until I got notice that I had violated the user agreement. I don't know how, maybe I used up too much space. Don't know.

A great platform for collaborative learning and a great platform for students!

5.0 2 years ago

Comments: When I first started to work with moodle I was incredibly stuck and did not really know what to do, however with the help of the online community and the documentation provided, my understanding of the platform grew quite a lot! What I like most about the platform is just the pure amount of customization you can do and no other platform similar to Moodle gives that! Overall, most of our students use Moodle so it is helpful to be able to work the platform and be able to keep up to date with what Is going on.

Pros:

The platform for me is great, Moodles overall robustness is fantastic and with help from their online documentation, you can easily customize the platform to your needs. The responsiveness and the design of the interface are what makes it so great for online learning/education. They offer incredibly detailed configuration options and the community is full of wonderful active people that are always there to help you if it's needed. Moodle also supports a wide array of 3rd party plugins which further enhance the amount of customization the platform supports.

Cons:

The platform at the start is very hard to get to grips with and learn and without the documentation, many people would be stuck on how to work Moodle. Their mobile app is also somewhat quite behind their desktop version in terms of functionality which is a bit disappointing. Overall it is a great piece of software though!
