Studio let us build a full set of custom models, youth records, expenses, funders, budgets, without writing a line of code, which is rare for a system this deep. The external API is clean and well documented, so we could connect our own tools and front ends to it without fighting the platform. It is modular, so you only switch on what you need, and when it works it replaces a pile of spreadsheets and disconnected tools with one system. For a small organisation that needs a real database rather than another silo, the software does the job. > > **Cons**: The commercial and support experience is the problem, not the software. Support was billed against our success pack in fifteen minute increments, including time spent on Odoo's own internal work. When Odoo moved our project to its US office, the only way to get support within the evening hours our volunteers actually work, we were billed four hours for the handover between their staff. Reviewing their own notes, watching their own videos, meeting their own colleagues. When we objected, we were pointed to an email that had warned us it would be chargeable. Earlier in the build they tried to reclassify standard Studio automation as custom code to justify a maintenance charge, which we disputed. You learn quickly that anything near the edges of the platform, including exposing your own custom apps to portal users, is either a potential invoice or a limitation nobody flagged at the start. > > Capable software wrapped in an adversarial commercial relationship. We are a volunteer-run charity working in suicide prevention, funded by grants, and we chose Odoo to consolidate our operations. The build itself is achievable and the tools are strong. What wore us down was the billing culture around it. Every interaction felt metered, every customisation felt like a risk, and goodwill was absent at exactly the moments a charity needs it. If you have a commercial budget and technical people in house, you may absorb this.
