Additive Manufacturing
Additive manufacturing (AM), also called 3D printing, is a printing process that adds materials layer by layer to make a three-dimensional object from a digital design. AM uses computer-aided-design (CAD) software or 3D scanners to accurately deposit and layer the materials. In contrast, traditional methods remove materials through milling, machining, and other methods.
What Small and Midsize Businesses Need to Know About Additive Manufacturing
Manufacturers use AM to create production parts that are lighter and stronger. In the construction industry, parts can be made faster with greater accuracy and less waste. Individual components of a building or an entire building can be 3D printed, which can be beneficial for complex designs.
